The GVSU Women’s Center will shift its focus from violence against women to sexual abuse against children in its noon lunch series this month.

Staff from Ottawa County’s Children’s Advocacy Center will conduct a training on preventingchild sexual abuse on Friday at Grand Valley State University’s Meijer Campus, 515 S. Waverly Road.

“Recognizing this kind of abuse against children is very much a part of our mission statement,” Women’s Center Director Jo Ann Wassenaar said. “When we’re talking about domestic violence, sometimes this kind of sexual assault and violence gets pushed to the side.”

The program, titled “Darkness into Light,” will run from noon until 1:30 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public.

The program is designed for organizations that serve children and adolescents, as well as adults interested in protecting children from sexual abuse and violence. The training is based on the nationally-recognized Stewards of Children program.

The Ottawa County Children’s Advocacy Center provides prevention, intervention and treatment in child sexual abuse investigations.

Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch.

To register or for information, call the GVSU Women’s Center at (616) 331-2748 or visit www.laadsv.org.

The program is sponsored by the Women’s Center, GVSU Continuing Education, Lakeshore Alliance Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the Ottawa County D.E.L.T.A. Project.
