A few months ago, I interviewed at Darkness to Light for a social media internship. During that time, I was focused on finding an internship, and little did I know this organization would change my perspective on life. As I read about its dedication to raising awareness of child sexual abuse and how to prevent it, I became immersed in the mission. When I joined the D2L family, I was required to take the award-winning Stewards of Children training. From there, my experience became a real eye-opener. As an intern, I am encouraged to know about the issues surrounding child sexual abuse. I spend most of my time researching about the topic–often stumbling across stories of people who have suffered from this epidemic. It is quite the experience, but I have become much more knowledge about the issues than ever before.
How has Stewards of Children made an impact on me…
At the age of 21, I am an aunt to seven wonderful little kids. My nieces and nephews mean the world to me — they manage to always put a big smile on my face. I am not sure what the future holds for us, but I do know that I hold the power to protect them from the danger of child sexual abuse. With help from Darkness to Light and Stewards of Children training, I know how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Why other college students should take the Stewards of Children training…
Being a full-time college student is not easy. In addition to classes and studying, I spend 15 hours a week working and 12 hours a week interning. I admit, I am guilty of living in my own world, but I realize that there is much more happening outside. I am trying to change the way I see things, and therefore I highly encourage college students to learn about the world outside of their own. As future leaders, we have the opportunity to make a difference. I can assure everyone that there is nothing more satisfying than knowing how you helping those around you. Stewards of Children empowers adults to protect children and increase awareness. Today, I am taking initiative to discuss the issue of child sexual abuse with my peers; every conversation counts.
