Dear Darkness to Light Supporters,
As some of you may know, the trial of Jerry Sandusky, the former football coach at Penn State, is scheduled to begin on June 5th. We hear from our friends at the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) that the media are already there in force waiting for this next stage. We want to change the dialogue AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Prevention Committee of The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers and the NSVRC have been working together to beable to move some of this media attention towards prevention. Most of the stories will probably focus on whether he really did all that he was accused of and maybe more. Will you believe him or the stories of these young boys? We imagine that all of it will be focused on the incident and how people responded to the allegation. We imagine that very little media will be focused on prevention.
To begin to talk about and focus attention on what we can learn from Penn State to make our communities and organizations safer for children, we have drafted four different letters to the editor. If you have never sent in a letter to the editor of your local paper, now is the time!
We want you to choose any one of these letters, make whatever changes you want to make and send it to your local paper. With nearly 400,000 individual’s trained in Stewards of Children, imagine if every one of us sent one of these letters to our local paper. We would have the chance to focus everyone on the need for prevention.
