In light of the attention child sexual abuse has been receiving lately, we thought it would be a great opportunity to revisit the 7 steps. So over the next week, we will be posting a step everyday.
Step 1: Learn the facts. Understand the risks.
Be aware of the threat that children face from CSA. Accept and acknowledge that CSA is real and that it does not discriminate. It can happen in any town, school, faith center, and neighborhood. Know that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys fall victim to child sexual abuse before the age of 18. Understand that 90% of all vicitms were abused by a person in a position of trust. We no longer can make decisions based on trust or a persons’ position in our community. Decisions in turn need to be made according to the facts of CSA. Once we start actively using this first step, we begin our journey of making it a safer place for all kids everywhere.
